MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
Importance of Voting!
AFT members who become politically active on behalf of candidates who support world-class schools and high-quality public services have always been the union’s “difference-maker” during the election season.
Many people feel that their votes do not matter and that change is not possible. This article will tell you more about the importance of voting and why each and every citizen should cast his/her vote.
When it come down to a vote, all humans are equal. A wall street executive's vote counts just as much as that of a school janitor.
That is the importance of voting, believing that true equality can exist. When we cast our votes we make ourselves go a step further, in order to elect a candidate who will see to it that our needs and demands are fulfilled.
Election outcomes are determined by those who participate. Voting does not guarantee that one's preferences will prevail, but choosing not to vote denies a person one of the key tools of having a say.
Your right to vote is your right to expression and opinion. Do not take your right for granted. Try and appreciate the power of voting by exercising it!
So, if you are one of those people who think voting is a waste of time, think again, your vote can make a difference! So we urge you to VOTE, and get your friends, family and neighbors to vote at the upcoming MISD School Board Election.
Lobby Day Experience:
Unity - The state or quality of being one. It sure takes many people to become one voice. That is what I experienced at the Lobby Day in Austin. Many teachers, parents, students and paraprofessionals, gathered to become one voice and let our representatives hear our concerns and worries for our future students who will be the professionals of tomorrow. We got to enjoy the trip and were able to let representatives know how the budget cuts would hurt education.
The rally showed power and determination. It was an awesome and wonderful experience to support the American Federation of Teachers Union for Lobby Day. It is unbelievable what AFT does for its members, I can really say that they just don't talk they take action! I had never visited the State Capitol before and I loved it, AND IT WAS FOR FREE!! ~ Lupita Herrera—Data Clerk
