EYES ON THE BOARD
In Case You Missed This!
On Friday, August 1, 2008 the McAllen ISD Board met from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to set goals for the district for the 2008-2009 school year. The following are the goals (in my own words and in no particular order): Improve teacher and staff morale, improve technology, improve community and parental involvement, improve curriculum planning, and improve discipline.
The above list of goals is used to evaluate the superintendent. How the superintendent gets these goals accomplished is not known at this time. There were more goals mentioned, but I feel these are the top 5.
Mrs. Chapa was late as her mother-in-law had a heart attack on Thursday evening July 31. Mr. Kent, McAllen ISD Board President, says he talks to Superintendent Chapa daily (more about this later).
A recap of administrative appointments with board approval might be helpful.
Philip Grossweiler is the new principal at DeLeon. The principal for Crockett is Mariselda Morales.
Lou Ann Sarachene (Asst. Principal at McHi) is the new Perez Elementary Principal. Carlos Hernandez (Asst. Principal at DeLeon) is the new Brown Principal. Yvette Cavazos is the new principal of the Early College High School.
Leonel Garza and Pedro Alvarez are new Asst. Principals at Rowe. Elizabeth Reynoso is the new Asst. Principal at Houston. Cynthia Saldivar is the new Director for Professional Development/Grant Development Compliance. Karina Zuno-Chapa is the new Coordinator for the Newcomer Academy. No action was taken on hiring a new coordinator for elementary math.
Rio Valley, contractors for Lucile Hendricks Elementary, say the school will be ready for students on August 25, 2008. Case work (trim) will continue into September. It is going to be very close to finish the building on time. We notice that Fossum looks good from the outside. The tennis courts have been completed and painted. We hope to tour the facility as soon as the Fire Marshall approves visitors. Our weekly emails will keep you up to date on what is going on.
The Central Kitchen and Plant Operations Buildings continue with planning and preparation. The bus barn to be located also on the Rowe campus is moving forward with architectural services.
